A good rule of thumb when deciding how much food to order depends on the restaurants proportion and how many people will be eating. All proportions should be the size of your fist and just multiply that by the number of people you are ordering for. If the restaurant provide larger proportions, buy less food for each person.

Decide how much food one person would eat and times it by the number of people you are feeding for the occasion.

I base my rule of thumb on the amount of money in my wallet, all food groups and at least a three course meal.
