You can try regular household bleach, but it generaly does not have the desired effect. There is a product called oxalic acid that is very effective. It can be found in drug stores in crystal form. It is mixed in water and applied to the wood. Additional application may be needed. The process raises the grain, sanding will be required.

All you need to do is go to the hardware store and purchase some wood bleach. Then just mix it with water and carefully apply it to the wood while wearing protective gear according to the directions. Then it is typically rinsed off and the wood is allowed to dry.

Wear rubber gloves and goggles, and use a synthetic-bristle brush. Apply the bleach along the grain of the wood, wetting the surface evenly and thoroughly. After bleaching, wipe the wood clean with a damp cloth. Let the piece of furniture dry for at least two days.
