A great way to get rid of mothball smells is to put the clothing item in a paper bag with some baking soda or clay kitty litter. The kitty litter or baking soda will absord the mothball odor. I know this might take awhile if there are a lot of items, but it's worth it.

To eliminate mothball odor from clothes, wash them in baking soda and add 10 to 15 drops of lavender or eucalyptus essential oil. After washing, iron the clothes, and then hang them outside for about two to three hours.

You can wipe the coats down with vinegar diluted with water. Hang the coats on the shower bar and put a fan facing them, then wipe down the coats with a white washcloth and the diluted mixture of 30% white vinegar and 70% water. After the coats have dried, smell them and if they still smell like mothballs, repeat treatment.

With regular clothing, a few minutes in the dryer with fabric softener tissues works great. With things like expensive clothes and jackets, place in a clothing/plastic bag with a box of baking soda for a couple of days, then hang out in the open air for a couple of hours.
