Natural remedies (vinegar) or commercially sold chemicals will work, but make sure you have a well-ventilated room with a HEPA filter in order to catch any airborne spores when cleaning.

You will need to buy one of the products that are made to remove mold and keep it from coming back. Bleach will remove the mold, but will not keep it from returning.

Mold is very hard to get rid of. It can also be very dangerous. It is not good for you or anyone else to breath the mold spores. It may not be possible to remove the mold from a surface such as carpet. You may need to remove the carpet to get rid of the mold.

If the carpet is small enough to be put in the washing machine bring it to the laundry-mat and wash with vinegar or with a color safe bleach. If it is wall to wall carpeting you can try steam cleaning, but the carpet may have to be replaced entirely.

Carpet must be pulled up and the padding may need to be removed. A professional carpet cleaning service can inject material into the padding to get rid of the smell.

Mold is really one of the most worst things to have around you. One way to get rid of it is to use baking soda and sprinkle in all over you carpet and let it soak. If that does not work there is always removing it as an option.

If it smells, it's most likely mildew caused by excessive moisture. You need to kill the mildew spores with a solution of 2 tblsp ammonia, 1 cup warm water. 1st, vacuum area thoroughly. Blot the area, and dry/rub with white towel. Thoroughly dry the area with a heater or fan.

Use a carpet cleaner (often available for rent at your grocery store) and use a cup of vinegar in each wash.

The only way to do that is to pull it up and look underneath it to make sure it is not coming from below the carpet. Then I would clean the floor underneath and put down fresh carpet.
