Poking a hornet's nest will start a war with the hornets that you will likely lose. Approach a hornet's nest after nightfall, when the hornets are asleep. Wear protective clothing! Have a flashlight, and locate the part of the nest with the openings. Spray insecticide all over these openings, wetting down the nest. Then run away.

You should get a specialist to do it. Hornets are actually protected as an endangered species in several countries. So, rather than killing them a specialist would remove the nest at relocate it to a place where the hornets do not bother anyone. Otherwise, if you take actions yourself and kill the animals, you may have to pay a fine.
