The "safest" way is to: Set-out ant-baits in sheltered-areas where you have seen ants & where children & pets can not get at the ant-baits. Ant baits contain chemicals which usually interfere with the ants development and/or reproduction. Alternatively, you could spray ant-insecticide, but you risk contaminating water and/or children/birds/fish/pets.

To get rid of an ant nest, pour hot water into the hole or use a hose to spray high power water into the ant nest. Another way to get rid of an ant nest would be to buy insect repellent or poisonous food specifically designed for the ants to carry to the queen bee.

You need to make sure you kill the queen ant. She's the one all the worker ants are working for. Also, make sure your house or apartment is very clean; no crumbs or food left unattended. Ant traps will work because the workers will bring the poison back to the nest.
