Infected sinuses are caused by mostly viral upper respiratory infections. Sometimes, bacterial infections cause it as well. These infections are contagious but may not cause sinusitis in everyone who catches them. Instead, others may just get cold symptoms.

Usually it happens after a cold where the body hasn't completely healed itself and it can be contagious. You may have sinus problems like post nasal drip. Check with a doctor. You can get rid of it by taking simple antibiotics.

A sinus infection can come from you getting a cold and it lingers on and on and it gets no better. You then start getting headaches and your head gets clogged up with mucus and your nose starts running yellow junk. Then your sinsus are infected. Sometimes when you blow your nose green junk comes out. Only a cold is contagious.

A sinus infection is not contagious. It occurs when mucus in the sinus cavity is unable to drain. This allows bacteria or other germs to build causing an infection. Usually, steaming your face with warm water helps unblock the sinuses. Chronic cases may need an antibiotic prescribed by a physician.
