It is a result of osteoporoisis, if it runs in your family then make sure to get a bone density study around age 45. Women should be having 2 servings per day of dairy to get enough calcium. It can become troublesome with age.

dowager's hump is an abnormal outward curvature formed in the upperback. it is formed in the vertebral column. when a compression in the involved portion of the vertebra happens, it leads to bending of the vertebral column forwards and leads to the formation of a hump so called dowager's hump. it is very painful and can be prevented.

Dowager' hump is not painful. It is probably caused by a bone density deficiency. In other words the bones are not strong enough to retain posture and so they curve. Usually associated with the lack of calcium and other minerals. There are medications that can prevent and others that help.
