Finding adoption papers can be a real challenge. You first need to contact the adoption agency or state where the adoption took place. Once you do that you may run into road blocks. If it was a closed adoption you may not be able to get much information. If it was an open adoption you'll have better luck.

First you must find the agency that helped your parents legalize the adoption, sometimes it may only be a lawyer. You probably won't be able to get much information since you are not the adopted child nor his birth relative. You can also try searching hospital records in the hospital where he was born.

Adoption records are closed once the adoption is finalized. It is impossible to obtain a copy of these documents. Sometimes agencies offer open adoption where all parties agree to have their information made public, but private adoptions are just that, private.

Most courts have sealed these records. Your best bet is to contact a lawyer and give him all the information you have. He would be better dealing with agencies and they would be likely respond one way or another. Some parents who gave their children up for adoption have signed their rights away.

You can try searching the health department's public records in the state your brother was born in. If this information is sealed, you will not likely be able to find it. You may want to hire a private investigator to help you with this process. They can be cheaper than an attorney, and nearly as effective.

Most areas have a local department of family and children services location. From there you should be able to get the information you need.
