The best thing to do is contact your local housing authority. They have a list of places that offer low rent options, and even programs to help you be able to afford your own place. Typically they will run a credit check to make sure you have a good payment history on your utilities.

Turn to the internet first. If you don't find anything there, pick up an apartment guide at the grocery store. Also, look at ads in the newspaper.
