How do you express your dog's anal glands?

Is it okay to do it your self?

It is okay to empty your dog's anal glands yourself. You will need to get a towel or rag of some sort. Then you cover the dogs anus with the rag and place your fingers on opposite sides of the anus (off of the anus itself) on top of the rag. Firmly squeeze the two sides together towards the anus.

To tamper with your dog's anal glands by yourself could be detrimental for the animal's wellbeing. Unless you are a vetrinarian, go to the vet to have this procedure handled by the professionals. Both you and the dog will be a lot happier with the results and there will be less of a mess.

If you can, it's good for your dog. Hold the dog's tail firmly; with your other (dominant) hand holding a folded paper towel, use your thumb and forefinger to press firmly inward/upward at the 4:00 and 8:00 clock-positions around the dog's anus. During bathing is easiest (the dog's already stationary).

When needed you can express the anal glands yourself. The safest way to do so is to ask your local vet to demonstrate the tecqunique to you.

Holding their tail, gently squeeze either side of their anus. If you`re not sure you can do it, DONT! Get a vet. The glands can rupture and require medical attention.
