To do a fade or taper on short hair, use a smaller guard on the shaver and lighten the pressure applied in the fade/taper zone. Keep doing this around the head until the long on top starts to fade into the short part on the bottom.

I've tried doing the fade myself on my husband but I wasn't very good at it! I found a video on You Tube though showing me how to do it correctly and I think now that I'm more informed I will be able to do it better. You can find them for tapering too.
