How do you dispose of lawn mower batteries?

To dispose a lawn mower batteries, look in your local newspaper for an ad. There is usually an ad telling a place to recycle them. You can not throw them in the garbage! It's illegal! Some 'Office Max' stores will take batteries and recycle them too.

lawn mower batteries are like all batteries potentially hazardous materials. You can either return it to the place you bought it or bring it to the local public works

If you mean the batteries in a rider mower, they are similar to car batteries, and any auto-parts store that accepts old car batteries for recycling will accept your mower batteries. If you mean the batteries for an electric mower, many places that sell power tools take this type of battery back (home depot, for example)
