Question by  Sally10 (70)

How do you dispose of an old mercury thermometer, or is this something I should save as a collectible?

I need to know if it is safe to throw an old mercury thermometer in the trash or if I should save it as a collectible.

It is illegal to throw mercury thermometers in the trash all over the country. There are designated drop offs for such items. Maybe call your local government for details.

It is definitely not safe to put it in the trash. Mercury is very harmful to the environment. It is dangerous to keep if it breaks because of the mercury.

These can be turned in to your local hazardous waste disposal center. These centers typically open once or twice a year and allow disposal of these things.

Mercury is a hazardous material and should never be disposed of in the trash. Your county likely has a hazardous waste collection site you can drop it off at. If the thermometer is really old, it just might be worth something as a collectable. An antique shop could tell you.
