How do you determine the gender of a parakeet?

I was recently given a pet parakeet and have no idea what gender it is.

Parakeets (or budgies) have a fleshy area above their beak, called a cere. This is the fleshy area where their nostrils are located. A female bird's cere will be a brown or tan color, while a male's cere will turn a blue or purple color. Generally, birds under 6 months of age will all have a pinkish cere.

The bump above the budgie's beak is called the "cere. " When the bird matures, the male's will be blue and the female's will turn pink or brown.

Parakeet gender is very simple to determine. If the area on the top of the beak is blue, then the parakeet is female. Otherwise it is male.
