Sentence structures are made up of the simple parts of speech. The simplest independent clause which is a complete sentence, has at least a noun and a verb. Determining sentence structures first require identifying the parts of speech which are noun, verb, pronoun, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.

Sentence structure depends upon clauses (i.e., word groups containing one subject and predicate). Simple sentences contain exactly one clause. Compound sentences join together more than one independent clause with coordinating conjunctions like "and". Complex sentences have at least one dependent and one independent clause. Compound-complex sentences contain at least one complex sentence joined by a correlative conjunction to another clause.
