How do you defrost a freezer?

There are two options. You can unplug the freezer (which would be troublesome if it is connected with a fridge, because that would disconnect the fridge too) and allow it to completely defrost. Or you can keep it plugged in and running, but open the door to fridge and run a hair dryer on it until the ice is gone.

Overall the easiest way is to take everything out of it (and put it in another freezer if) and turn it off or unplug it. However, if that's not an option because you can't relocate everything, check to see if your model has an auto-defrost feature (it would be in the manual). Some models can self-defrost without thawing the contents.
