You must first cut the side to a finger width length. Then you must slowly fade to a longer length on the top of the head. Trim the top section of hair to desired length.

A faux hawk is not generally a type of haircut, but a type of style. If your son's hair is short enough, you can probably make one with gel.

A faux hawk can actually be cut in multiple ways. The traditional way is similar to a mohawk. The hair is buzzed on the sides and what's left is a patch of hair down the center of the head. A mohawk is left with long hair, but a faux hawk is left with shorter hair.
