The easiest way to make a baby's hat is to crochet a circle, and then narrow the layers so that the shape becomes convex. You don't necessarily need a pattern, just measure your work against the baby's head, or if the baby isn't yours, take measurements and use a measuring tape. Striped layers are easy to begin with.

Chain 5 and connect to beginning with a slip stitch. Chain 1, 2 single crochet in each chain and connect with a slip stitch to the first chain 1. Repeat for each row until circle has reached appropriate size of for baby's head.

Use a single crochet to weave back the yarn back and forth. Make sure you twist at the ends. There are some great videos on you tube that show you exactly how.
