Create a list of questions, and then a list of answers, and then on a piece of graph paper try to fit all those words together.

Use graph paper for the grid. Write up a list of the words and clues for those words. Then, put the words on the graph paper, making each of them use at least one letter from an existing word on the grid. After you have it done, recopy the grid sans words to make it a puzzle.

Start by writing out your questions and answers. Take each answer and apply them to the layout of your choice. A rule of thumb would to cross them against the vowels or look for common letters like R, S, T etc. Once this is done, mark the answers with numbers at the start letter and then list the corresponding questions.

The difficulty of a crossword puzzle is primarily dictated by the clues and the manner in which the answers are presented. Start by making a grid and filling in the parts that cross them. Then think backwards to what the clues should be for each after you have fit everything in correctly. Not all words have to cross every instance.

There are many programs on the internet that will allow you to create your own puzzles. I would do a search on www. google. com for "Crossword Puzzle Generator". Then choose a site, create your puzzle, print them out, and share with your girl scouts.
