You cannot convert tapes to DVD on a VCR. If you stuck a DVD into a VCR nothing would happen other than you possibly having to open the VCR in order to retrieve the DVD. In order to do what you are asking you could purchase something like a DVD VCR combo unit with a DVD-R built in.

you plug up both a dvd recorder and a vcr to your tv via AV cables. plug the av out cables of the vcr into the dvd recorder. set the recorder to the vcr input and push play on the vcr and record on the dvd player.

The easiest easiest way to convert an old VHS tape is to buy a DVD recorder/VCR combination. With that you can put your tape in and put a blank recordable DVD in the recorder and Dub the VHS Tape to the DVD.

One possibility is to connect a VCR to a DVD recorder via Cinch cable. The cinch cable has three sub-cables (yellow, red and white). Plugin each cable to the corresponding output of the VCR and the corresponding input of the DVD Recorder. Then start playback on VCR and recording on the DVD recorder.
