Shingles in the same herpes virus that causes chicken pox. So contact with people whom have chicken pox may lead to shingles. If you have ever had chicken pox it may reoccur as shingles later in life under periods of extreme stress

You can only get shingles if you have had the chicken pox's first. Shingles is another form of chicken pox's virus. Shingles can reoccur and is more common in the elderly.

The herpes zoster virus, that causes chicken pox is the culprit. The virus lives in the nervous system never fully clears the system, reactivates, thus shingles occurs via a rash.

Shingles is a varicella virus, very similar to chicken pox. While there is a vaccine for chicken pox, it does not prevent shingles. The best way to prevent a virus is to wash your hands thoroughly several times a day and avoid people who have shingles.
