How do you charge a home air conditioner?

It depends how accurate you want to be. You can look up the recommended amount and get a scale and weigh in the proper charge by hooking up the gages. You can vapor charge it. You can also use the temperature plus 30 degrees and charge it to that on the gages. That is just a ballpark charge though.

Most AC repairs on this level are not "novice friendly" as there is a lot of electrical work involved. Consult a licensed electrician or consult your user manual before self-repairing.

You need a charge adaptor, refrigerant and a balance. Release/recover the remaining refrigerant in your air conditioner with the charge adaptor. Respect local laws (in several countries it´s not allowed to release refrigerants into atmosphere). Place the refrigerant can in the center of the balance. Open the valve and close it when you have charged the correct amount of refrigerant.
