Streptococcal bacteria, or "strep bacteria", causes strep throat. It is airborne, so breathing in the microscopic droplets from coughs, sneezes, etc., of someone who has strep throat can spread it.

Coughing and sneezing of an infected person causes the strep throat bacteria to become an airborne contagion. Contact with contaminated surfaces/objects is another possible route of transmission.
