I would recommend either getting security cameras setup throughout the store or getting a loss prevention employee. I would recommend having both the employee and the cameras.

Retailers can employ plain-cloth police officers in the store, but just make sure you see the shoplifter take the merchandise and leave the store without paying for it, and then approach them outside of the store. Use cameras also, they are a big help.

You can start by installing cameras, and putting up signs stating that the store is under video surveillance. Be on the lookout for any suspicious activity and keep a close eye on customers. Be on the floor when there are customers in the store. You can also have customers place large bags on the counter while shopping.

The best means to stop shoplifting is by observation. Shoplifters have a behavioral pattern that is different than normal customers. The key is in being aware of what your customers are doing. Generally the large the store, the more risk you have. the greater the need for anti-thief officers. People who's only job is to watch your customers and observe.
