You can grow them in a planter, or plan them directly in the ground. They do not need especially rich soil; you probably won't even need to fertilize it. Mulch can help to keep down weeds. Expect that a hard frost or freeze will kill the plant, but it may weather over a light frost.

A desert plant, the moon plant flower opens one night of the year and closes before daybreak. They grow in poor, sandy soil and can survive lots of hot weather. Insects and disease don't appear to be a major problem. They will not survive frost or freeze.

Moon plants need some type of a support such as a trellis or even a fence. They need to be planted in the spring and love full sunlight.
