Water electrolysis be done by simply putting two charged plates, called electrodes, into a container of water and hooking them to the terminals of a battery. Hydrogen will bubble up from one electrode and oxygen will bubble from the other. Needless to say, you will shock yourself or start a fire if you're not careful.

You can make a simply hydrogen collector using a bottle, some water, wire, and a battery. Then use the bottle to collect hydrogen bubbles off the negative wire.

You can obtain hydrogen by splitting water molecules using electrolysis. Attach wires to the leads of a 9volt battery. Dissolve salt in a glass of water. Put the wires from the battery in the water but don't let them touch. You will see Hydrogen and Oxygen bubbles on the wires.
