You can build one from wood using a simple design found in many craftbooks or online. You can also get creative with materials. I have seen birdhouses using license plates, twigs, shells, mirrors and any number of odd materials. If you and your son make a simple design sketch then find the materials, you are set.

I would Take at least 8 Pieces of wood, cut four the same way for the walls. Cut two the same way for the ceiling and floor. You would also need Some nails or glue, which ever you prefer. Of Course you will also need some paint for once you have built you can decorate.

At yourlocal supplier, buy wood and a saw and glue. Saw the wood and glue it together, in a pleasant way, so the birds like it.

You can build a birdhouse by finding scrap wood that you might have laying around somewhere and cutting it into the appropriate sizes.

There are a lot of patterns online to follow. I work at Lowe's and there is a great kit for about 10 dollars that gives you everything you need in one box. The tools required for it are safe for children to use with parent supervision. I made the catapult last week.
