It would be easy to decorate for the different seasons. You could use greenery year round and just change the accents. For example, in the spring use silk flowers, winter use Christmas theme and for the fall use pine cones and Thansgiving theme and then in summer maybe use a beach or pool theme.

the best way to decorate staird in a home is to pain them. You can paint them with a variation of the main color- they can be two toned. Also, you can stencil paint decorations on them. If you dont want to paint, you can always put plants on the side of the stairs.

Stair runner with a good quality carpet is an option, especially if you are concerned about people slipping and falling on bare wood stairs. The pattern and color should be similar to the color of your walls.

On option is to hang interesting things on the wall going up the staircase. This gives people something to look at while ascending or descending. You could use photographs or art work to create an interesting and attractive stair case.

I wouldn't recommend decorating stairs as they are a high traffic and potentially dangerous area. The most you want to do is paint the railings, use a darker carpet tone (since stairs get dirty quickly) or wrap a garland around the staircase. Stair decorations should probably be reserved for holidays.

If you have a hand rail that comes down your stairs then you have many different options. You could try wrapping the hand rail with ivy or silk flowers. You could put lights on the hand rail. You could also trying putting some potted plants along your steps. If you are able to maybe try hanging a chandelier above them.
