Physicians must complete a four-year college degree, go to medical school, complete the four-year program of academic study and the related externship, then pass the national medical board exam. The degree of MD or DO is granted and the individual moves forward into internship and then a residency.

To become a doctor of any type one starts with a 4 year bachelors degree usually in science or biology. Then there is medical school which is 3-4 years. After that comes residency which is working as a doctor in a program that varies in length depending on what type of medicine one wants to practice.

First you'll need to earn a bachelor's degree in a science-related subject such as pre-med biology, chemistry, physics, chemistry or physiology. Second, you'll need to attend an accredited medical school and obtain a license from your state. Third, seek out job opportunities by talking to former professors or classmates.
