Included in that; a certificate or associates degree in addiction counseling, possible internship, state licensing exam and no use of drugs, alcohol or other addictions. In order to be recognized as a certified counselor, you would need to first graduate college with a degree in behavioral health/ substance abuse counseling. Then after getting a bachelor's, you would be required to achieve a master's usually while interning at a behavioral health facility. Then you would be able to go at it alone.

Well, you have to get a certification as a social worker. Go to school and take courses in sociology and human justice. Get a bachelor of arts degree in your field. Also gain some more professional experience in a clinic and you are well on the path to helping people.
