I called a friend recently, and it played a song for me while I was waiting for him to pick up.

These are called ring-back tones. If your cell carrier offers these, you can usually add them by contacting customer service or purchasing them online via your phone's web browser.

On your phone there should be some type of media menu where you can purchase songs. Then in your settings play the song as a ringback tone.
