An artist should consider the time and materials invested into the work, compare the work to the prices of similar artwork in the market, and set the price accordingly.

It is a subjective process. Artists price their work to stay competitive and also have a gallery markup to put into it

What an unknown artist wants for his or her own work is a personal choice. It is usually based on how many hours of work the artist put into it, how much the artist really wants to part with it, and also could be based on past sales.
