If you take your dog to the vet, they will most likely prescribe some sort of pain-killer or anti-inflammatory medication. In extreme cases, the dog will have to undergo surgery.

If it is a mild case, your vet may recommend weight loss and pain relievers. Some exercise like swimming and pulling a cart strengthen muscles around the hips and provide extra support for the hips. In a severe case, surgery may be required. Consult with an orthopedic specialist in choosing between the surgical options available.

Initial treatment should consist of medications such as Rimadyl and adding supplements of glucosamine and chondroitin daily which can be found in over-the-counter pills such as Triple Flex. These may also be found in various brands of dry dog food. For more severe and advanced hip dysplasia that has not responded to the above, your vet may recommend hip replacements.

There is a surgical treatment. If you do not want to go that route there is something that you can do to help your dog. You will want to make sure that the dog is maintaining a healthy weight. Heat can also help. Make sure that the dog has a soft and comfortable place to sleep.
