If the margins are clear and contain no cancer cells then the cancer has not spread. But if the margins do contain cancer cells then it indicates that the cancer has spread and the doctor will need to see exactly how far to go to find clear cells.

Resecting margins will remove some of the tissue that is cancerous and that can allow for the other treatments such as chemo or radiation to work properly and more effectively. This can help in removing some of the cancerous tissue before it has a chance to spread to the rest of the body.

If the resection margins are very close to the health tissue the cancer may appear again so it is treated locally with radiation of the scar and the lymph nodes.

The resectioning margins have to do with diagnostics in cytology re: breast cancer. I would be completely out of line, and very wrong ethically to try to give you an answer in 50 words. You can source this online and read the extensive literature, but I strongly suggest you consult a Cytologist or your Oncologist for this answer.
