The tire pressure sensors work by detecting the pressure within the tire iteself. As soon as it registers a low tire pressure situation it sends the information to the ECU and it is reported as such.

The wheel hub features a ring that has a bunch of teeth like a gear. The teeth are steel, so an electromagnetic sensor can detect how many teeth have gone by. Then, the computers do some simple math to come up with RPM. This information is used by the traction control, the anti-lock brakes, and sometimes the speedometer.

The wheel speed sensors are inductive pickup type and the computer "reads" the speed of each wheel. When one or two wheels are at different speeds the AWD kicks in. This also works for braking. The ABS will release the pressure on the wheel that is locking up (going slower than the other 3) for a split second.

Wheel sensors are basically used to measure the speed of each wheel. A eye reads a ring to give a speed and can tell if it has traction or not.

The wheel sensors which sense punctures work by monitoring the distance between the location of the sensor itself and the location of the tire. Nice car!
