Choose the correct type of tile without the finished or factory edge. Choose a large size marble or ravertine with a square or "block" edge, for instance. Find the exact center of the area to be tiled and layout from there. Use a 1/4" thinset trowel and carefully butt the block edges together, cleaning up excess thinset as you go.

I would say if you have regular ceramic tile pieces, you will have to groat. Maybe if you use real big pieces of tile or use vinyl or linolium you won't have to.
