Basic signs of a healthy cat: regular eating habits, regular bowl movements, sleeping a lot but also playing and being active a good part of the day. If it's not doing any of these things, or is coughing, walking odd, scratching excessively, or has watery eyes/nose, check with your VET.

Cats don't show obvious signs sometimes like dogs do. It is important to know your cat's habits very well. From sleeping to eating and drinking. Its also important to note how much they play. If ANY of these changes then it is best to take them to the vet.

If your cat is acting differently than normal it could be a sign he's sick. If his energy level changes, if his appetite increases or decreases, if he has to eliminate himself more, etc.

There are many ways, usually involving unusual behavior. Frequent vomiting for example. A potty-trained cat that goes potty outside of the litterbox may be another sign. A normally skittish cat that is too serene may be a sign, as is the opposite. Getting a vet to analyze a stool sample is cheaper than a checkup if you're on a budget.
