Reward him when he does (by compliments) and punish him when he doesn't (take away priviledges). This is the only way.

Teach your child that there are consequences for misbehaving. If he doesn't listen tell him that he will lose a privilege such as no television for a night or no video games. Make sure you stick to what you say. It's important. Most children misbehave because their parents do not give consequences for bad behavior and carry through with them.

Be firm when you speak to your son. Look him straight in the eye and say whatever you intend to and wear a serious look. Firmly mean what you say, including punishment. you may sometimes need to use a strong voice when you say something. If the child can reason, try sitting down with him and reason.

I agree, but it will take a while to undo 10 years of him not listening and doing as he pleases. Be patient, firm, and most importantly be consistent.

Try taking him aside and explaning to him why what you are telling him is important. Be firm but positive. If this does not work, take away any privileges he enjoys, such as TV time, until he changes his behavior. It may take some time, but be patient and consistent.
