Dogs are instinctually born to lick themselves. It is their way of cleaning and scratching that area of their body. It is actually very beneficial as the excessive licking stimulates their genitourinary tract aiding in urination. If the licking is very excessive it could be caused by an allergy or other problem and could be helped by a vetrinarian.

If you figure this out, let us all know! No, seriously... it's their natural habit. Although it is a little uncomfortable and embarrassing when you have company over - your dog doesn't understand that. So, when he/she plops down in the room with all of your guests and kicks the leg up, try to ignore it.

Your dog has a reason for doing that, he needs to keep himself clean down there. That is part of their nature. So why do you want him to stop from doing something that he needs to do?

Canine genital licking is normal and shouldn't necessarily be stopped. It is how dogs keep themselves clean down there, and not allowing can lead to infection.
