Birds will not land on or build nests on surfaces that have sharp, pointy objects coming from them. Affix some nails or other long metal objects to a small piece of wood and set that on top of the porch light.

I have tried putting aluminum foil crumped beside and on top of the porch light but they knock on the foil on top.  add a comment

We have had the same problem occur at our house. We have tried everything including chicken wire, changing the light fixture, but the only thing that has worked, was to put a life-like bird (fake) on the light fixture. Seriously, it's goofy, but it works!

Wrap the surface that the birds nest on with wire, wrap it with a net to reduce the surface area for the bird to nest on.

Buy bird spikes or bird strips and put them on top of the light. These are thick, bent wires that are U-shaped. They repel birds and discourage them from building on surfaces that they cannot perch on. If the metallic spikes distract from the look of your porch light, you can always repaint them to match.
