How do I soften bright paint?

I have a can of really bright paint, and I would like to tone it down... what is the best thing to do?

Adding white paint will work, but it might make it look a little pastel-like. The best thing to do is to pour some of your paint in a separate cup, and experiment with some mixing. Brush that on a inconspicuous area and see how you like it.

I think a key with experiementing with new colors is to see them in the room where they will be used. Relying on the light available at the paint store can lead to surprises. Lighting varies from room to room.  add a comment

Well for really bright paint you can try cutting it with a lighter color. Something like white will really soften it. However note that it will make it more pastel colored. You can also try using a dark colored primer to make the topcoat slightly less bright.

You need to use a complimentary color to tone it down. Ask your paint store if they have a color wheel which will aid you in knowing what you need to add. For example, for a green that is too bright you would add a touch of red.
