You would want to ask which administrator at the school is over the RSP department, and talk to the RSP teacher(s) at the school. Normally, there are steps before an IEP. My school does a Student Study Plan (SST), in which the teachers, parents, students, counselor, etc. all meet to assess needs and make a plan before an IEP.

A parent can request an evaluation of their child under federal IDEA law if they think their child may have learning needs that are not being met by the school district. If the child meets eligibility criteria under special education law, then an IEP is written by a team of specialists under an IDEA category for learning services.

It is best to work your way up the chain of command. Begin by talking with his teacher. If you disagree with the teacher, ask for a meeting with the principal, teacher, and a special education teacher in the school.

Make your request in writing. The National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHY)has a sample letter which you can use for your own personal situation. Make sure to keep a copy for yourself before giving a copy to the principal of your son's school. If you don't hear from them in a timely manner, call them.

Start with your son's teacher she will coordinate with the proper personnel at his school to test him to find out what type of IEP he needs.
