The most important thing is to make sure the soil completely covers the roots and that it is not packed to tight for the roots to stretch out. The other thing is when you water it for the first time make sure to only dampen the soil not flood it.

There is no easy way to accomplish this without being either a trained or skill botanist. There are so many different varieties of this plant type there is no Generic-Way.

Make sure you are putting it into a big enough pot then when you are ready to transfer it make syre you tip the old pot upside down and pour the plant out into your hand. Levae whatever soil is stuck to it on it when you repot.

Make sure container has good drainage system. Place plant at same depth as previous container. Water well and wash your hands after touching, as dumb cane can be fatal.

If you are repotting an existing dumb cane, select a pot that is slightly bigger than the current one. Transfer the entire root ball from the old pot -- including all dirt and roots -- to the new pot, and fill in the extra space with new potting soil. Be careful during the transfer not to damage the stalk.
