If a dog is timid or fearful, perform your assessment of the dog slowly and with much care given to putting the dog at ease. You should be able to perform an assessment for medical purposes. If assessing for temperament be sure to observe reactions as you go.

An assessment on a fearful dog should be done with great care. It should be done slowly and you should make sure that you give the dog a sense of safety. Make sure the dog understands that you are in charge and gradually expose him to certain things.

Do not enter its space, stay quiet and make sure you look the dog in the eye. If he's barking at you, tucking his tail and pacing, just allow the dog to get some confidence before even approaching it. You may need an assistant so be careful.

Assess the dog's surroundings, attempt to determine if the dog is habitually fearful, or if it is a result of immediate circumstances.
