Make a pretzel with one cord. Then, make two pretzels, one going left, one going right. That's a carrick bend. Then to make a lanyard (the other name for diamond knot) use four strands and make four pretzel knots linked together, this will look like a ball-shaped celtic knot going around four strands. Or, go to a beading class.
