The best way to verify the size of pipe required is to use the charts in your state's plumbing code. There are many other organizations that provide charts such as the American Society of Plumbing Engineers. Piping is sized by tabulating the number of fixtures on your system and referring to the charts as you add fixtures to the line.

You can ask a plumber. You could also ask the plumber to do your plumber while you're at it since you might mess up and you do not want to mess up that kind of thing because it will cost even more than the plumber did. If you have that kind of money, then just go for your favorite size.

If you are replacing exsisting piping this is an easy answer. Just look at the side of the exsisting piping and you will see what size it is.
