A goiter is a swelling in the thyroid gland. It is important to know that goiters do not always cause symptoms. If they do, some of the symptoms may include: a swelling in the neck area, which can cause throat tightness, coughing, difficulty swallowing, and also difficulty breathing. Goiter is a condition in which the thyroid, a tiny gland below the Adam's apple, swells due to problems with hormone production or because of an iodine deficiency. The thyroid can swell to the size of a softball, but any thyroid swelling is most noticeable.
