An anethesiologist is a physician, an MD or DO. You must complete medical school, and then a 3-5 year residency program. Along the way, you will be required to pass national boards, as well as the written and oral exams for your specialty board.

Although similar, they both deal with anesthesia and can work in the OR, these two titles have involved different levels of training in terms of the amount of time spent learning more in depth about the human physiology. You will still need to enter medical school to become an anesthesiologist but it may be easier given your background.
