If chimney show any structural damages, risk of collapsing or any hazards, it is better to reconstruct it after scrapping the whole thing. Also provide an insulated metal lining system, which is flexible and free of any discontinuities in the liner, to avoid condensation.

A chimney cap keeps rain, snow out of your flue. use a hammer to repair a chimney only made on steel or copper. clean out any soot or debris from underneath chimney cap. A damper closes the flue when you aren't using the fireplace so heat doesn't escape the chimney.
